Key Information for International Students

Pastoral Care of International Students

Code of Practice
The New Zealand Government wants students to be well-informed, safe and properly cared for while studying in New Zealand.

The Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students sets out standards for the welfare of students. All New Zealand education providers who enroll international students must meet the standards.

Concordia Institute of Business has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Minister of Education. Copies of the Code are available on request from this institution or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at http://www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international. If you have any queries about the Code of Practice, please contact the Academic and Quality Assurance Manager (see Staff Profiles page).

The Code of Practice ensures that:
  • High professional standards are maintained;
  • Recruitment, financial and contractual dealings with international students are ethical and responsible
  • Students receive comprehensive, accurate and up-to-date information
  • Students receive information before making commitments
  • The particular needs of international students are recognized, especially those who are vulnerable because of their youth or lack of experience
  • Support services are provided, and are sensitive to cultural matters
  • Students are in safe accommodation
  • There are fair procedures for the resolution of grievances
Complaints
The International Education Appeal Authority (IEAA) is there to handle any complaints international students might have about the way they have been treated by their school. You can contact the IEAA by email or phone (09) 374 5481.

Before going to IEAA, however, you should try to resolve the complaint with Concordia. Complaints / grievance procedures are on the student noticeboard, and in the International Students’ Handbook, which is given to students during orientation.
